Porto is consistently the most affordable major city in our European comparison. Living costs run 15-25% below Lisbon, with particular savings on dining and housing.
What to expect
A single person can live well in Porto on €1,200–1,800/month excluding rent. The Bolhão Market and local grocery shops offer excellent value. A typical lunch menu (prato do dia) costs €6-8 at neighborhood restaurants.
The Andante transit card costs €30/month for the metro and bus network. Porto is compact enough that many residents walk or cycle for daily errands.
Neighborhoods by budget
- Budget-friendly: Campanhã, Paranhos, Bonfim — student-friendly areas with the lowest costs
- Mid-range: Cedofeita, Lordelo do Ouro — creative neighborhoods with good value
- Premium: Foz do Douro, Ribeira, Boavista — waterfront and central areas at Porto’s top prices (still cheaper than most of Lisbon)
