Barcelona is the most expensive Spanish city in our comparison, driven by high tourism demand and a competitive housing market. Daily living costs are 5-10% above Madrid, with a larger gap in tourist-heavy areas.
What to expect
A single person should budget €1,800–2,600/month excluding rent. Groceries are comparable to Madrid, but dining out costs more in central neighborhoods. The Boqueria and Santa Caterina markets are excellent for fresh produce at reasonable prices.
The T-Casual transport card (10 journeys) costs €11.35; a monthly pass (T-Usual) is €40 for zone 1. Barcelona’s compact center makes walking and cycling practical alternatives.
Neighborhoods by budget
- Budget-friendly: Sant Andreu, Nou Barris, Sants — local neighborhoods away from the tourist center
- Mid-range: Gràcia, Poble Sec, Sant Antoni — popular with expats, good balance of price and lifestyle
- Premium: Eixample, Born, Barceloneta — central locations with the highest price tags
