Lisbon has become one of Europe’s most popular expat destinations, and prices have risen accordingly — though it remains significantly cheaper than Western European capitals like Paris or Amsterdam.
What to expect
A single person can live comfortably in Lisbon on €1,500–2,200/month excluding rent. Groceries at local markets (Mercado da Ribeira, Mercado de Arroios) are 30-40% cheaper than supermarket chains. Eating out at local tascas costs €8-12 for a full meal; tourist-area restaurants are 2-3x that.
Public transport (Viva Viagem card) costs €40/month for unlimited metro, bus, and tram. The city is also very walkable, especially in Baixa, Chiado, and Príncipe Real.
Neighborhoods by budget
- Budget-friendly: Arroios, Penha de França, Marvila — up-and-coming areas with lower prices and good local restaurants
- Mid-range: Graça, Alfama, Campo de Ourique — established neighborhoods with character and reasonable costs
- Premium: Chiado, Príncipe Real, Estrela — central, polished, and priced to match
